Quilt a Gift by Barri Sue Gaudet
Barri Sue Gaudet‟s newest book celebrates the joys of creating a handmade gift. The book itself is a tranquil joy in soft pastels, with wonderful photos and nice matte pages.
One of my favorite projects is the Birthday Candle Mat. Put a cute cupcake on the mat in front of the birthday person and they‟ll know they‟re spe-cial. It could be the beginning of a birthday family tradition.
Other projects include the Forever Frame, a perfect wedding or friendship gift that can be made in a couple evenings; the Cuddly Baby Blanket, both super fast and super sweet; and the Keepsake Heart, which includes a small pocket, perfect for dried flowers or a sprig or two of lavender.
Anyone have friends who sew? They want you to make them Sewing Kit Holders. In fact, I want one of my friends to read this and make me one. My birthday is in May, but Christmas will be fine and then you can place the kit in the Christmas Gift Bag, also shown in the book!
The unique and sweet remembrances in Quilt a Gift by Barri Sue Gaudet, offers twenty five ways to create the perfect gift.
Out of the Box by Mary Lou Weidman
Mary Lou Weidman makes a very bold statement in her newest book, Out of the Box. She says, “Reading this book can change your life, even if you simply take some time to think, imagine and look at the wonderful photos offered.”
Mary Lou has a real passion for encour-aging a creative spirit. Her wonderful, positive and infectious personality comes through on every page. Exercises and ideas using intuition, invention, imagination, concepts and connections encourage you to embrace quiltmaking with a new perspective and a new joy. Mary Lou wants you to inhale the world around you and grab all the ideas you can.
Jump right into expressing yourself by creating Mary Lou‟s signature story quilts. These small whimsical pieces combine words, thoughts and emotions and are way fun to create.
The technical advice is superb, with excellent discussions of fabric personalities and use of color. The illustrations and instructions for blocks and borders are excellent, including hilarious “hoochie mama” blocks. Mary Lou backs up her opening promise with the real deal. Out of the Box will help you become happier in what you do, one stitch at a time, one block at a time and one quilt at a time.
Ziploc® Omelets
Recipe provided by Carol Stoehr.
Ziploc® Omelets - Carol Stoehr
Having a family reunion or going camping this summer? This omelet recipe is eggs-actly what you need.
Bring a large pot of water to a rolling boil. Put out an assortment of prepared ingredients, such as cheese, ham, onions, peppers, to-matoes, hash browns, salsa, or other favorite omelet additions.
Ask guests to write their name on a quart-size Ziploc® Freezer bag with a permanent marker and then crack two eggs (only two) into their bag. Zip it shut and shake until the eggs are scrambled. Unzip and add their favorite assortment of ingredients. Force the air out of the bag and zip it shut again. Place the bags into the boiling water - you can usually cook 6-8 omelets at once - and boil for exactly thirteen minutes.
Cut open the bags and the omelet will roll out easily. Everyone will be amazed!
This recipe and many more can be found in
The Quilt Crossing Cook Book. The cost is $17.95 - with $2.00 donated to The Idaho Food Bank for each copy sold.
Quilt Shows
It‟s quilt show season and you won‟t want to miss some area favorites. We love them all, but three that
are nearby are: the Valley of Plenty Quilters Show in Emmett on June 17, 18, & 19; the Boise Basin
Quilters Quilt Show at the Boise Centre on the Grove, June 26 & 27 (with Marianne Fons as the featured
speaker - we sponsor her show “Fons and Porter‟s Love of Quilting” on PBS); and the Idaho Piecemakers
Quilt Show at the Kuna High School on August 7 & 8. You‟ll want to check out all three.
